The clients had a back yard that was underused, a small aging pressure-treated deck that was not big enough for entertaining and was not built to withstand Newton winters. They wanted something that would last, look great year-round, and handle guests without feeling cramped.
We designed a 600 sq ft composite deck using Trex Transcend decking in a two-tone pattern. The design incorporated built-in bench seating along two sides, a pergola centered over the dining area, and cable railing to preserve the sightlines to the yard. All hardware was rated for high-moisture environments.
The structural design required footings at 48 inches depth to comply with Massachusetts frost line requirements. The ledger attachment was flashed correctly and inspected before any decking went down, the step most contractors skip and the one that causes the most problems long-term.
Newton permitting took approximately three weeks. Construction followed, and the deck was completed and inspected in under three weeks from the start date.
